Iskut, 252 kilometres (151 miles) beyond Meziadan Junction, is also known as Barrage Burn as a result of a lightning fire which swept through the area in 1958. Locals claim the huckleberry bushes which covered the burn constitute the largest patch in the province. The grizzly bears which are prevalent here seem to agree.
Many of the Iskut aboriginal people in this community of 400 use their wilderness skills as guides for raft trips through the Grand Canyon of the Stikine River and leading trail rides into Spatsizi Plateau Wilderness Park.
There are also several guest ranches and wilderness resorts in the area. Iskut is also the place to arrange a paddling tour of the Iskut Lake chain, between Mount Edziza Provincial and Spatsizi Parks.
