Incorporated in 1966, the township is a small community of approximately 5,200 people, in the heart of the forest industry. Mackenzie is the gateway to Williston Lake, created for the WAC Bennett Dam on the Peace River. Mackenzie is located on Highway 39, only 29 km from Highway 97, placed at the base of the beautiful Omineca Mountain Range, and positioned within the Rocky Mountain Trench.
Mackenzie is an outdoor playground with many fresh-water lakes with fantastic hunting and fishing locations. Camping areas accommodate every taste. Sites range from rustic recreation to the comfortable full service Municipal RV Park. Beautiful Morfee Lake is only minutes from downtown for swimming, boating, water-skiing, or just enjoying the scenery while lounging on the sandy beach.
Recreational facilities within the community can be found at the Leisure Services Centre complete with competition-size swimming pool, sauna, hot tub, weight room, and much more. Mackenzie also boasts an arts centre, museum, and a bowling alley. Mackenzie Golf & Country Club offers a challenging, yet picturesque, nine-hole golf course. Other popular summer pastimes are baseball, soccer, biking, and hiking on the numerous back-country trails.
Alpine skiing is nearby at Powder King Mountain Resort, only a 45-minute drive from Mackenzie. Little Mac Ski Hill, which is right in town, offers children and adults alike a chance to ski or toboggan for just the cost of a rec-centre pass. For cross-country skiers, there are first-rate groomed trails seconds from downtown, in pristine wilderness surroundings. The continuous snowfall over the winter ensures that daily fresh powder is readily available, for not only the skiers; but also snowmobilers too! It is a sledder's paradise with alpine powder climbs and our yearly snowmobile drag races.
