The largest City on Graham Island, Masset is the Gateway to Naikoon Provincial Park. The Haida word "Naikun" meaning long nose (a reference to Rose Spit, a long sandy point at the north corner of the park) was the name given to this 72,641 ha park established in 1973. Tow Hill, formed of volcanic rock which solidified about 2 million years ago into faceted basalt pillars, rises from the flat bogs of the Argonaut Plain at the mouth of the Hiellen River.
Visit The Delkatla Wildlife Sanctuary, a 228ha wetland set aside for many migrating and resident birds. There are observation tours and several trails through the refuge. Over 140 species have been recorded here, including trumpeter swans, peregrine falcons and bald eagles.
In the Village of Masset, there are accommodations, several grocery stores, gas stations, general stores, hardware stores, local artists co-op, ATM machine and restaurants. In the Village of Old Massett, there are many Haida artists who offer their silver, gold, argillite, wood carvings, print and woven baskets for sale. Look for the eagle and the raven totem poles looking out over the ball field near the museum and a dogfish pole at the Haida Arts & Jewellery Shop.
Motel, B & B, Lodge and camping accommodation is all offered. Shops, restaurants and golf welcome visitors. Fishing is, of course, world class.
