Vanderhoof is located on the banks of the Nechako River 100 kilometres (60 miles) west of Prince George. It was founded in early 1900s by an American publicist looking for a place to build a retreat for artists and writers. The provincial government, to lure settlers to the region to farm vast tracts of cheap land, had hired him. Although the retreat was never built and the writers never came, prospective ranchers came here in droves.
Vanderhoof quickly became a centre for ranching and logging. Both industries have helped open up the surrounding wilderness for anglers, canoeists, cross-country skiers and wildlife photographers. In their wake came a number of lakeside resorts and wilderness retreats.
The Vanderhoof Bird Sanctuary, along the route of the Pacific Flyway, is considered a mecca for bird watchers. Tens of thousands of Canada geese stop to rest and feed on the small islands of the Nechako River during their spring and fall migrations. They are often joined by migratory hawks and owls, which also travel the Flyway.
Vanderhoof is home to many community events throughout the year including, Hooterville Hoot in June, Nechako Valley Exhibition in August, Pumpkin Walk in October and Parade of Lights in December.
There are many sports events and tournaments held annually including hockey, figure skating, curling, snowmobiling, golf, plus many recreation activities such as fishing, hunting, hiking, biking, canoeing and kayaking.
Service clubs, arts and cultural activities provide an added concept to the lifestyles of Vanderhoof.
