With emerging worldwide interest in West Coast Indigenous cultures, the new Haida Heritage Centre at Kaay Llnagaay (formerly spelled Qay’llnagaay) has opened its doors to the general public for its “soft opening preview season”. Visitors from all over the world have enjoyed a preview of this internationally significant showplace, and are giving rave reviews to this celebration of the living culture of the Haida civilization.
As well, Parks Canada provides daily visitor orientations and evening presentations about Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site in one of the classrooms at the Centre.

The $26 million Centre is a series of longhouses connected by interior walkways and fronted with six traditional totem poles representing each of six historic villages in the southern region of Haida Gwaii. The feeling is of a traditional Haida seaside village. This is a celebration of the living culture of the Haida people.
“SAVING THINGS HOUSE” or Haida Gwaii Museum: Audio-visuals and interactive exhibits feature Haida history and culture including totem poles from Tanu and Skedans villages, Haida art, argillite carvings, and plant and wildlife exhibits. Films and interactive exhibits feature Haida history, contemporary culture and Haida Gwaii’s unique natural ecosystems.
“TRADING HOUSE” or Gift Shop: The gift shop promotes the work of local artists and artisans. On offer is a wide selection of Haida art, argillite carvings, silver and gold jewellery, pottery, paintings, and fine books.
“CANOE HOUSE”: The LooTaa canoe, carved by Bill Reid, can be viewed in the Canoe House. Learn the story of the LooTaa through time and Bill Reid’s role in canoemaking, as well as the world journeys it has undertaken.
