Kermodei Tourism - Terrace

“Terrace – Home of the Kermodei Bear!”

Red Fish & White Bears have distinctively branded Terrace, BC. Glacier fed rivers and lakes attract returning salmon and in turn this creates a flurry of wildlife activity including the elusive ‘Spirit Bear’ the Kermodei. The Kermodei is a genetically unique sub-species of the black bear. Kermodei’s are noted for their color which can range in various shades of white to degrees of cream or tan. The Kermodei was recently named the provincial mammal of British Columbia by Premier Gordon Campbell.

Terrace is the hub of the northwest, centrally located for day trips to Kitimat, Prince Rupert and the Nass via the Nisga’a Highway.  Getting here can be by many modes of transportation. Arrival by car following the Yellow-head Highway 16 west from Prince George is a beautiful trek with many rest stops and viewing points that you should take advantage of.

Cruise through the inside passage from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert, depending on the season the times vary, stay tuned for the maiden voyage of the new ferry scheduled to start in April 2007.

Approaching Terrace via air you are privileged to experience the scenery and landscape of the area. Hawkair is Terrace’s local airline and Air Canada – Jazz both provide daily flights to and from Vancouver. Direct flights are about 90 minutes and are adjusted seasonally.

Last but not least is the rail excursion, if your trip starts in Vancouver you will travel north on BC Rail with an overnight stop in Prince George. Next day you will travel west on the Via Rail Skeena train. What a wonderful way to experience the scenery and the wild life sightings that you will surely encounter with this style of travel. Be sure to bring your camera and sit back and relax. Upon arrival in Terrace you will be greeted by the friendly and knowledgeable staff that operates the Via Rail depot, available to answer all your ‘what’s happening” questions. The Via Rail depot is located in the George Little House (home of the founder of Terrace) which was moved and fully restored in 2005. Be sure to allow a bit of time to peruse and appreciate this lovely heritage building.  If heritage & museums are of interest be sure to visit Heritage Park for a look into Terrace’s past.

What ever your pleasure…..fishing, wildlife viewing, first nations culture, arts & culture, a trip up the Nisga’a Highway to the  Lava Beds, skiing or just a quiet retreat to our natural hot springs you will experience the best that the northwest corner of our province has to offer.
