Kitimat is a unique city, fully planned and established in the 1950s by the Alcan Aluminum Limited. It is nestled among the low hills at the head of the Douglas Channel. The Douglas Channel offers outstanding recreational opportunities such as fishing, cruising, natural hot springs, hiking, and whale watching. Salmon, halibut, snapper, crabs and prawns are abundant in the Douglas Channel. Trout and salmon fishing are excellent in the Kitimat River. Fishing and sight-seeing charters are available.
There are activities for every season in the valley including golfing on the professionally designed and challenging 18-hole Hirsch Creek Golf Course. Kitimat is a hikers dream, whether it is an adventurous hike up Mount Elizabeth or a simple hike through the Pine Creek Trail, visitors will love the scenery. Canoeing and kayaking are popular on the Kitimat River and Douglas Channel. Recreation facilities include the indoor sports complexes which offer a skating rink, indoor pool, exercise room, racquetball and squash courts. In winter, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling are popular.
Kitimat is proud to be home to several impressive industries: Alcan’s aluminum smelter; Eurocan, one of the Northwest’s largest pulp and paper producers; Methanex, which produces methanol and ammonia. Alcan and Methanex offer interesting, informative tours free of charge. Information regarding tours is available from the Kitimat Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Info Centre.
The Kitimat Centennial Museum has a fascinating permanent display of historic native artifacts as well as an interesting account of the economic history of Kitimat. Travelling displays appear at the museum on a regular basis. The museum art gallery also features the work of local artists. Be sure to visit the 500 year old giant Sitka Spruce tree located in Radley Park. Be sure to check the Events Calendar – Kitimat boasts numerous events.
Motel, B&B and campground accommodation is available.
